I believe here are my options to correct this.
Top of stairs transition to carpet.
New carpet will be installed so some sort of transition piece can be used if possible.
Most often the top stair will involve installing a stair nose.
4 test fit the transition trim placing it along the seam and gently stepping on.

The tacks should be facing toward the back of the landing tread.
